Saudi Arabia Joins BRICS Bloc: State TV reports
Saudi Arabia has officially joined the BRICS bloc, as reported Tuesday by the kingdom’s state TV, expanding the group’s membership.
The decision to join followed a period of consideration, with the foreign minister indicating in August that they would review the details before the proposed January 1st joining date, as reported by Reuters.
Prince Faisal bin Farhan described the BRICS as a beneficial channel for bolstering economic cooperation, highlighting the kingdom’s policy approach.
The BRICS bloc, originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is now expanding. Saudi Arabia is joining alongside other new members such as the UAE, Egypt, Iran, and Ethiopia.
This move occurs against increasing geopolitical tensions between the U.S. and China, indicating a shift in global alliances.
Despite its traditionally strong ties with the U.S., Saudi Arabia is diversifying its partnerships amid concerns over waning American commitment to Gulf security.
As Saudi Arabia’s largest oil customer, China has been a vocal advocate for expanding the BRICS, aiming to counter Western influence significantly.
The expansion of BRICS aims to amplify its role as a champion for the Global South, seeking greater representation and influence on the world stage.
However, not all invited countries are joining; Argentina signalled in November its decision not to accept the invitation to join the BRICS.
Saudi Arabia’s entry into BRICS signifies a shift in the kingdom’s foreign policy and a reorientation of global economic alliances amidst changing geopolitical dynamics.
