I’m a former England keeper – I played last decade of my career with a ‘dead’ finger and even wore a special glove
ROB GREEN spent the last decade of his career playing with a “dead” finger.
The former England goalkeeper has also revealed he had to wear a special glove to play through the injury.
Green retired aged 39 in 2019 after a career which included over 250 Premier League appearances.
He has since shown off a gruesome – and permanent – injury as a result of his time between the sticks.
The little finger on Green’s right hand is now wonky, with the 43-year-old explaining details of his horrific impairment.
He told Amazon Prime Video: “The tales of goalkeeping! Don’t be a goalkeeper kids.
“A long time of playing in goal, it got injured, dislocated and broken on numerous times and slowly started to die.
“It gave up essentially. It was when | started diving to my right and it started sticking in the ground. As I was diving I thought I might need to get seen to.
“Glove manufacturers very kindly made me sort of a paddle hand, which had the two main fingers and one larger finger, where I could tape it together and keep it relatively straight.
“So for the last ten years of my career I had a finger brace within my gloves to help me. I survived through the games. It’s stayed that way ever since and now it’s a nice icebreaker for conversations!”

Green won 12 caps for England during his career, including the infamous World Cup opener against the USA in 2010.
At club level, he made 267 Premier League appearances for West Ham, QPR and Norwich.
The keeper also had spells with Leeds, Huddersfield and Chelsea, where he won the Europa League in 2019.
