Opinion: Spurs full time ratings vs Brighton – Too little, too late

Here’s how we rated the Spurs players following the disappointing 4-2 defeat in this evening’s Premier League clash against Brighton and Hove Albion at the Amex Stadium.

Ange Postecoglou‘s side trailed 2-0 at half-time and appeared to be out of the game as Brighton pulled away with a stunning third goal from Pervis Estupinan and another penalty from Joao Pedro.

Late goals from Alejo Veliz and Ben Davies made things interesting, but sadly, it wasn’t enough to pull off a complete comeback and the Lilywhites come away from the game empty-handed.

Guglielmo Vicario: First half heroics kept Spurs in the game in the first half, and he could do very little about Estupinan’s sublime goal which ended the contest. A valiant effort but sadly all in vain. 7.

Pedro Porro: A fairly quiet game. Caught out of position at the back a few times. Did little going forward overall but did deliver a fine assist for Ben Davies’ goal late on. 6.

Emerson Royal: Caught out by high, long balls a couple of times which put Spurs in danger. Far too careless in possession, and never looks confident when facing an attack. Postecoglou has to play a proper centre-half at the weekend. 4.

Ben Davies: Looked bewildered in the first half, but stood his ground and appeared calmer in the second. Still, a sub-par performance from one of Tottenham’s most experienced heads, even with his goal. 5.

Destiny Udogie: A solid first half display defensively but had little impact going forward. Should have scored when played through in the box early in the second half, with two bites at the cherry. Never stopped trying to make things happen going forward. 6.

Pape Sarr: A composed performance in the first half. Some neat footwork to create an opportunity for Udogie early in the second half. Replaced just after the hour to cap a fairly underwhelming night. 6.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg: An effective, simple display in the middle of the park. Will be criticised for not offering the dynamism of other players in his position, but did the dirty work well and never stopped running. 6.

Dejan Kulusevski: Clearly had a point to prove in the second half, working hard all over the pitch, but to little avail. His game will be remembered for that nonsensical shirt pull. 5.

Brennan Johnson: Finds himself with the ball in dangerous areas often, but has looked indecisive and played with too much caution to make an impact. An underwhelming night for Johnson who will be disappointed not to have affected the game more. 5.

Heung-min Son: Dug deep and inserted himself into the game more in the second half, winning the ball back a couple of times and creating opportunities in dangerous areas. Provided a selfless assist for Veliz late on. 6.

Richarlison: Hit the post in the first half. Missed a golden opportunity early in the second half. Had the ball in the net twice, but called offside both times. Replaced with 35 minutes to go and will be frustrated by his evening. 5. 

Giovani Lo Celso: On for Pape Sarr after 64 minutes. Gave away a penalty with a clumsy challenge from behind and did nothing else of note. 3.

Bryan Gil: On for Richarlison after 64 minutes. Took some time to get himself into the game, but worked hard, showed lots of willing and energy down the left. 6.

Alejo Veliz: On for Johnson with 20 minutes to go. Bagged a consolation goal, which is the one bright spot for the night. Neat little turn in the box in injury time nearly leading to a second goal. 6.
