Mum’s ‘world shattered’ after son, 15, and boy, 18, killed in car crash

The mothers of two boys have said the world has been ‘shattered’ after their sons were killed in a three-way car crash just days before Christmas.

Connor Lapworth, 18, of Blyth, a coastal town about 13 miles northeast of Newcastle, was pronounced dead at the scene on Friday evening.

A second boy, Corey Mavin, 15, also of Blyth, suffered head injuries and died in hospital.

They were travelling in a Suzuki Vitara with two other men, aged 41 and 17, who suffered serious injuries and remain in hospital.

Connor’s mother, Jenna Parsons, remembered her ‘little firecracker’ on Facebook as the ‘life and soul’ of the family.

‘My world has come crashing down tonight,’ she wrote.

‘Being told my son was in a crash and hasn’t made it, then going to identify him, has hit me different. I’ve lost my boy, my everything.

‘Connor, you were the life and soul of this family. There is no one that could ever take your place, son.’

Joint in their grief, Corey’s mother, Lisa Mavin, added that she was with her son the moment he died.

‘My world is shattered,’ she said on social media.

‘I keep looking into his room expecting to see him there. I thought I heard him cough. His little brother asked if that was his voice he heard.

‘I’ve never known pain like this. The last time I heard from him was 1.55pm that day. I feel so guilty.

‘I wish it was me, but instead, I lay next to my boy while his heart took its last beat.’

Northumbria Police said that both mums and their loved ones are being supported by specialist officers ‘at this devastating time’.

The collision on the A192 Hartford Bank, in Cramlington, six miles north of Newcastle, saw the Suzuki Vitara smash into a Range Rover Evoque and a Ford Focus.

The Range Rover driver, 36, suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

A 52-year-old woman behind the wheel of the Ford Focus was uninjured.

Investigators have asked witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage of the local area to get in touch.

Sergeant Russell Surrey, of Northumbria Police, said: ‘This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are firmly with the family and loved ones of the two young people who have sadly lost their lives and those who have suffered injuries in this collision.

‘We will offer them all of the support they need and ask that their privacy is respected at this time.’
