Il Mattino have revealed that Napoli are willing to explore a potential loan move for Tottenham Hotspur defender Eric Dier in the January transfer window.
Over the past couple of months, plenty of Italian outlets have reported on AS Roma’s interest in Dier (TMW) while some other publications have also backed Sporting Lisbon to explore the possibility of bringing the centre half back to Portugal (talkSPORT).
Napoli’s interest in the Spurs stopper first came to light last week when Il Mattino (via The Sun) revealed that the 29-year-old is one of four Premier League centre-backs that the current Serie A champions are weighing up as they look to bolster their backline for the second half of the campaign.
It was reported that Napoli, who took Tanguy Ndomble on loan from Spurs last season could be set for a battle against Jose Mourinho’s Roma for Dier’s signature.
The same outlet has now shed further light on Napoli’s interest in Dier, stating that the England international is ‘one of the candidates’ that the Italian side are eyeing as they study potential loan options.
The report points out that a temporary move to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium could be on the cards for Dier next month, given that he is ‘completely on the fringes’ at Spurs.
Dier has found himself considerably down in Ange Postecoglou’s pecking order with Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven the first-choice pairing and even Ben Davies and Emerson Royal drafted in as cover ahead of the player who has been capped 49 times by the Three Lions.

Given that Dier has just six months left on his contract at Tottenham, I do not see why Spurs would want to loan out the 29-year-old rather than cash in on him.
The decision on his next destination will come down to Dier himself, with the centre-back currently in a powerful position and would be able to command a much more lucrative package as a free agent next summer.
