Tottenham Hotspur fans will have to wait until 2025 to see Luka Vuskovic in action for the Lilywhites, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get excited about the kind of defender the young Croatian is developing into.
It is fair to say that Tottenham need new defenders right now, and many expect Ange Postecoglou to make the signing of a new centre-half his top priority in the January transfer window.
Still, the future is bright in that area for Spurs, with the likes of Ashley Phillips and Alfie Dorrington pushing for first-team opportunities already.
Further down the line, however, Tottenham may have an exceptional talent on their hands in the form of Luka Vuskovic—once he’s actually allowed to join the club, that is.
The 16-year-old has signed with Spurs in a deal worth a reported £12m (Independent), but is not technically allowed to play for the North London side until 2025, when he turns 18.
If you’re wondering how the youngster is getting on, Football.London have put together a report on Vuskovic’s progress this season.
The bad news is, Vuskovic has yet to feature for Split this season, despite making a promising start to his career last term. He has been in the matchday squad six times so far this season, but hasn’t made it onto the playing field.
But, there is plenty of good news to balance that out. First of all, Vuskovic has featured three times for the Croatia Under-19s in recent European Championship qualifiers, so he is still getting experience on the international stage.
More importantly, he has been playing regularly for the Hajduk Under-19s, too, and has been excelling at that level. Not only are his defensive skills on show, but it seems Vuskovic has developed an “eye for a goal” of late. To say he’s a centre-back, a return of six goals in 14 games for the Hajduk youth side is no mean feat.
The report adds that Vuskovic is looking like “the ideal centre-back” for Postecoglou’s style and system, and “has time on his side” to continue his development further.
It is said Vuskovic “could turn out to be quite the transfer coup” and has even been billed as “the future of Croatian football.” With all this in mind, it is no surprise that there is an expectation for the player to have a “bright future” at Spurs.

Our central defensive options may well end up being the strongest area of our squad in three or four years’ time. Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven will be incredibly experienced by then, and the likes of Phillips, Dorrington, and Vuskovic will be more prominent, too, which is very exciting.
