In July, the United Nations announced that progress toward achieving the global Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 is falling substantially short (1). Countries around the world have also failed to meet the Aichi Biodiversity Targets (2). Climate anomalies are breaking records, and the global warming target of 1.5°C set in the Paris Climate Agreement is likely to be surpassed soon (3). Despite these shortfalls, the EU and its Member States are pursuing legislation that undermines global goals.
