Buying the Christmas shopping can be one of the most stressful times of the year – which has been made even worse for some shoppers by an unpleasant stench.
Shoppers at the Clevedon branch of Tesco have reported a ‘rancid’ smell which is ‘stinking out’ the supermarket, hardly an ideal setting to buy your stuffing and sprouts.
The smell was first reported back in February, and although it seems to come and go, the stink has returned with a vengeance in recent weeks.
Some even say the stench has put them off their Christmas shopping altogether.
One shopper described the smell as like a ‘dirty rabbit hutch’, while others compared the branch to a ‘sewer’.
The stench is apparently strongest around the entrance to the shop, but can be smelt throughout the building.
Some shoppers are ditching Tesco altogether, opting to use different supermarkets instead.
Bosses at Tesco say they are aware of the whiff which they believe is being caused by a blocked drain.
Contractors wearing protective suits were spotted at the store this week inspecting the drains.
A Tesco spokesman told SomersetLive: “Our maintenance team are working hard to solve this issue at our Clevedon Superstore as soon as possible.
‘The smell is caused by a blocked rainwater collection drain.’
