THE CROWN is coming to an end after six seasons.
Here’s all we know about the blockbuster Netflix series, and whether season 6 part 2 will be the show’s last.
Series six, part two of The Crown will be the show’s final instalment.
The Crown’s official Twitter account suggests that this will be the final series of the much-loved royal series.
In December, they tweeted: “Get ready for the final farewell. The Crown concludes on 14 December.”
Fans of the show replied to the Tweet:
“I can’t wait to see this, one is going to be most upset when this finished,” wrote one.
“I’ll be watching because the focus is finally back on the Queen, plus William and Catherine. Don’t mess this up!” Tweeted another.
The first part of the series, focussing on the death of Princess Diana, aired in November 2023.
The second part, which will be released on December 14, 2023, will focus on more recent events.
The show will certainly be coming to an end with series 6, as not enough time has passed to write a series on more recent events.
Peter Morgan told The Hollywood Reporter:
“[20 years] is enough time and enough distance to really understand something, to understand its role, to understand its position, to understand its relevance.”
Perhaps The Crown will be rebooted one day, but viewers should expect a long wait.
Series 6 part 2 of The Crown will contain 6 episodes.
In a first for the show, the series is split into two parts.
Part 1, on the tragic death of Princess Diana, played by Elizabeth Debicki, comprised 4 episodes.
Together, parts 1 and 2 make a full ten-episode series.
Viewers will be able to watch all episodes of series 6 part 2 from Friday, December 14 2023, on Netflix.
Royal expert Jennie Bond criticised the show — she branded the first part of Season 6 “tasteless and cruel” in a review.
The final instalment will cover events in the Royal family between 1997–2005.
The series will start soon after Princess Diana’s funeral, and cover Prince William’s relationship with Kate Middleton, which began while the pair were at University together in St Andrews, Scotland.
The series will also cover Princess Margaret’s final days, following a stroke, and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.
The series will also Prince Charles’ — as he was then known — wedding to Camilla Parker-Bowls.
Teasing the series on social media, The Crown tweeted on their official account, on St Andrew’s Day:
“A St Andrew’s Day treat: The couple you’ve all been waiting for. Season 6 Part 2 arrives 14 December.”
Meg Bellamy will play Kate Middleton, while Ed McVey will play the student Prince William.
The final part will also show former PM Tony Blair appearing as a successor to the Queen, in an imagined scene.
The Crown began on Netflix in 2016.
There have been six in total, each with 10 episodes each.
In total, there are 60 episodes of The Crown.
The first two series, starring Claire Foy as the Queen, Matt Smith as Prince Phillip, and Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret, covered events from 1947, up until the Profumo Affair, and the birth of Prince Edward in 1964.
For series three and four, Olivia Colman, Tobias Menzies, and Helena Bonham Carter took over, and covered events between 1964 and 1990.
In series four, Gillian Anderson played the late Margaret Thatcher, former prime minister.
Imelda Staunton took over the role of the Queen for series five and six, joined by Jonathan Pryce, Lesley Manville, Dominic West, and Elizabeth Debicki.
