India has partnered with the UNODC in Afghanistan to aid Afghan drug users, focusing on females. India provided 11,000 units of hygiene kits, baby food, toys, blankets, clothing, footwear, and medical supplies to UNODC, Kabul.
“India has now partnered with United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Afghanistan to provide assistance for the welfare of Afghan drug user population, especially females. Under this partnership, India has supplied 11,000 units of hygiene kits, baby food and hygiene kits, toys, blankets, female clothing, footwear, medical aid and other miscellaneous items to UNODC, Kabul,” according to the report.
The National Livelihood Mission and the Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Department of the Government of Karnataka have been instrumental in supplying Channapatna’s organic-color crafted wooden toys to Afghan children. This initiative is part of the aid efforts for Afghanistan, focusing on providing quality educational play items for young ones.
These toys are not just playthings but carry a rich heritage. Channapatna’s wooden toys are renowned for their organic colours and traditional craftsmanship. They are recognized and protected as a geographical indication (GI) under the World Trade Organization, highlighting their unique cultural and historical significance.
According to the report, “the toys included, magnetic letter/alphabet set, wooden building blocks and hand puppets. Along with sparking creativity, the toys will promote imaginative play and foster essential developmental skills.”
The Channapatna toys, destined for Afghan children, are the product of the skilled hands of women artisans from Fiza Handicrafts, a rural Self-Help Group based in Channapatna. These women have dedicated their love, passion, and craftsmanship to creating these beautiful wooden toys. Each piece reflects their commitment to the art and desire to spread joy to needy children.
Their work not only brings smiles to the faces of Afghan children but also showcases the rich cultural heritage of Channapatna’s craftsmanship. The toys are more than just playthings; they are symbols of hope and happiness, meticulously crafted by these dedicated women artisans who infuse each toy with a piece of their heart and culture.

The Uttar Pradesh Handicrafts Development & Marketing Corporation (UPHDMC) played a vital role in the aid effort by providing a variety of items for Afghanistan. These included female clothing, 10,000 meters of cloth material, sneakers, slippers, coloured books, coloured pencils, and classroom furniture like tables and chairs.
Following the devastating earthquake, UNODC utilized a significant portion of these supplies to aid the victims in Herat. The remaining items are earmarked for use in Drug Treatment Centers and to support disadvantaged Afghan children nationwide.
India’s commitment to aiding Afghanistan has been substantial and ongoing. To date, the country has sent over 50,000 metric tons of wheat to help alleviate food shortages.
Additionally, India has provided 250 tons of medical aid, 28 tons of earthquake relief aid, and essential items like stationary and winter clothing. These contributions have specifically targeted the needs of primary students at Habibia School, demonstrating India’s focused approach to humanitarian assistance.
