Nasim Radio manager sentenced to one year in prison in Daikundi

The Afghanistan Journalists Center (AJC) announced on Tuesday that Sultan Ali Jawadi, the director of Radio Nasim in Daikundi, has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Taliban’s primary court.

The Center criticized the verdict as ‘non-transparent, unfair, and unacceptable,’ demanding a decision review and the journalist’s immediate release due to serious concerns.

The primary city court in Nili, the capital of Daikundi Province, summoned Sultan Ali Jawadi, and the judge sentenced him to one year in prison. Jawadi’s wife was also present at the session, and Jawadi was transferred to prison after the verdict was announced, the report said.

Local authorities have not yet commented on this verdict. Still, informed sources told the Afghanistan Journalists Center that Sultan Ali Jawadi was convicted on charges of ‘propaganda against the Taliban administration and ‘spying for foreign and infidel countries’.

The Journalists Center reports that after hours of interrogation, the detainees were released on September 24. Despite this, these three Radio Nasim employees were again arrested by intelligence on October 7th. Mojtaba Qasemi was detained for 6 days, Saifullah Rezaee for 11 days, and Sultan Ali Jawadi for 17 days. Information from the Afghanistan Journalists Center indicates that the release of these three journalists was arranged after a guarantee was provided.

The Taliban have not yet commented on the reasons for Ali Jawadi’s arrest and imprisonment. However, according to reports, Sultan Ali Jawadi was charged with ‘propaganda against the Taliban’ and ‘spying for foreign and infidel countries’

Since the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan, there has been an increase in the arrest of journalists. Recently, the Afghanistan Journalists Center reported 75 cases of freedom of expression violations in a six-month period, including 33 arrests and 42 threats against journalists.
