OAKLAND — A security guard at a convenience store near Lake Merritt was fatally shot Friday night while trying to stop a theft, authorities said.
The name of the 59-year-old man has not yet been released.
The shooting happened about 10:08 p.m. Friday at a 7-Eleven store, located at 2350 Harrison St., where authorities said the guard had worked for more than a year.
Police said the guard was shot by a man he was trying to stop from stealing some items in the store, but authorities did not say exactly what kind of items the suspect was trying to steal.
The suspect fled before officers got to the store. A detailed description of him was not released. The guard was pronounced dead at the store.
The killing is the 118th homicide investigated by Oakland police this year. Last year at this time police had investigated 114 homicides in the city.
