Terrorist threats raise concerns for Pakistan’s political leaders, minister warns
Pakistan’s caretaker Interior Minister, Sarfraz Ahmed Bugti, has voiced his apprehensions regarding terrorist threats targeting political leaders as the country prepares for elections in February, according to Dawn News.
During a press conference held in Islamabad, Bugti underscored the overall threat to political figures. He emphasized that political leaders in Pakistan are encountering substantial challenges when it comes to public rallies and gatherings due to the prevailing climate of terrorism.
The Pakistani Interior Minister stated on Sunday that the presence of political leaders at election rallies poses a significant challenge for the upcoming elections. He also pointed out the reluctance of Pakistani political leaders to limit their election gatherings and prioritize direct engagement with the people.
Mr. Bughti, mentioning similar security threats, recalled instances of political leaders in Pakistan being targeted and injured in past election campaigns.
Meanwhile, the Interior Minister of Pakistan issued another warning that Afghan immigrants in the country will be expelled if they engage in any form of political activity during the elections.
Sarfraz Bughti stated, “The right to politics [in Pakistan] belongs only to us.” He emphasized that no foreigner has a legal document allowing them to engage in political activities in Pakistan.
According to the Pakistani Interior Minister, so far, 10 foreign citizens have been identified involved in political activities in the country. Mr. Bughti stated that these individuals will be expelled from Pakistan regardless of their legal status.
The Pakistani Interior Minister, in part of his remarks, mentioned that since the start of the process of expelling undocumented refugees, more than 400,082 Afghan immigrants have “left Pakistan.” Mr. Bughti claimed that 90% of them have “voluntarily returned to their own country.”
