Young pro-life advocates are less likely to vote in the 2024 elections than those who support abortion in the same demographic, according to a national poll released by Harvard University this week.
The Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School conducted a national poll among 18-29 year olds which found the majority of those who planned to vote next year espoused an overwhelming preference for democratic candidates and values.
According to the Institute’s report, the survey polled 2,098 Americans between ages 18 and 29 from October 23 to November 6.
The poll discovered an “eight percentage point increase (36% to 44%)” in the number of young Americans who support access to abortion “in all cases” since 2016.
“When asked whether they consider themselves to be ‘pro-choice’ or ‘pro-life,’ we found that 53% chose pro-choice and 26% pro-life,” the report stated. “Ten percent (10%) cited neither, and 10% chose the don’t know option. Eighty-one percent (81%) of female Democrats, 58% of female independents, and a quarter (25%) of female Republicans chose the pro-choice label.”
The report found that “nearly half (45%) of all young Americans—including 56% of registered voters—say they will definitely vote if there was a referendum or ballot initiative related to legality of abortion in their state.”

However, 64% of the young people who consider themselves pro-choice said they would vote, while “only 35% of those who consider themselves pro-life say they would definitely vote in this hypothetical.”
Additionally, the poll found that 69% of women under 30 and 55% of men said they prioritized “legal access to reproductive healthcare, including abortion” when deciding which state to live in.
Overall, the report emphasized as its number-one takeaway that “most of the decline” in voting numbers “comes from young Republican and independent voters.”
