Ginuwine (‘The Masked Singer’) on overheating as Husky and reflecting back on classic ‘100% Ginuwine’ album [Exclusive Video Interview]

Things got a little hot on “The Masked Singer” for R&B superstar Ginuwine Wednesday night. “I don’t want to be no diva,” he recalls about complaints his Husky costume was overheating. The “Pony” singer was eliminated on episode 9 following an “I Wanna Rock” night performance of “Always” by Jon Bon Jovi. “For what it was all worth, it was something that I overcame. You can’t maneuver in that suit and it’s really heavy. I’m used to moving, so when I couldn’t move as much as I wanted to it got a little difficult.” Watch his exclusive video interview with Gold Derby senior Denton Davidson above.

Despite the heat, Ginuwine loved Husky and his experience on the FOX reality TV competition. “I thought they did their due diligence because that’s pretty much something that represents me,” he says of his costume. “I’m a go-getter. Whenever I see something I want, I go get it. I’m an alpha male. The suit represented me well and once I got it on it was fresh, I liked it! It was just hot.”

We also took time to reflect back on the singer’s classic 1999 album, “100% Ginuwine,” which included hits like “So Anxious” and “None of Ur Friends Business.” “They say that was my best album,” he says. “I’m happy about that because I overcame the sophomore jinx. I was so happy that album did better than my first album. That was a time in my life I’ll never forget.”

“That album was special because I was able to work with Aaliyah,” he recalls. “I was able to continue working with Static Major and of course Timbaland and Missy [Elliott] and all them. The music process wasn’t even long. We’d be in there all day, but I can write a song in 20 or 30 minutes. We could do songs in about two hours, so the process of doing the song when we were in there was the easy part. The memorable part was all of the things we did together, playing cards, joking, telling stories. That’s a time in my life I’ll never forget. It was just family back then.”
