In these days when Bad Bunny, Peso Pluma and Karol G all rank among the top 10 most-streamed artists of the year on Spotify, it might be hard to remember a time when when Latin music wasn’t a massive crossover success story in the United States.
Yet, one really doesn’t have to go too far back to find when the genre really struggled to get recognition in the mainstream pop realm in this country.
Three of the entertainers who helped to massively change all that, and further cleared the path for all the success that Bad Bunny and so many other Latin acts are enjoying in 2023, have combined forces and are out on the road delighting fans on the blockbuster Trilogy Tour.
A jam-packed audience of some 12,000 or so highly exuberant fans turned out to dance and sing along with the three equally impressive performers — Pitbull, Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin — on Wednesday (Dec. 6) at the SAP Center in San Jose.
It was an amazing opportunity to see three highly influential Latin music artists — all of whom, in turn, stand on the shoulders on the giants who came before them — on the same bill. Fortunately, local fans will have another chance to catch the action when the Trilogy Tour returns to the Bay Area for a show on Jan. 31 at Chase Center in San Francisco (chasecenter.com).
Each of the acts performed their own roughly one-hour sets, which were equally well received by the very vocal fans in attendance. The crowd mix skewed heavily to females, something that Iglesias highlighted at one point in his set.
“How many men are here tonight?” Iglesias asked, prompting a response that barely registered above crickets. “How many ladies?”
Boom. The ladies were most definitely in the house.
The running order of the sets appears to rotate from city to city, which is good for soothing superstar egos and giving each of the three entertainers the opportunity to actually close the show.
In San Jose, Pitbull went on first, appearing in cool shades, a trimmed beard that nicely complemented his signature bald head, and a slick suit that likely cost more than than this reviewer’s car.
He kicked off the party, ironically enough, with “Don’t Stop the Party” and then continued to roll right through such up-tempo favorites as “Hey Baby (Drop It to the Floor)” and “Hotel Room Service.”
Pitbull was incredibly gracious to the fans — repeatedly thanking Bay Area fans for all the support they’ve shown him during his career — as well as to his co-headliners.
“It’s an honor to be on the same stage as Enrique Iglesias and Ricky Martin,” he said.
Backed by a half-dozen female dancers and a top-notch live band, Pitbull was full of swagger and poise as he had the crowd in full party mode with the trio of “Timber,” “Fireball” and “Time of Our Lives” late in the set. He ended his set in triumphant fashion with “Give Me Everything,” which — as the confetti canons went off — felt every bit like a big show-closing finale.
And, yet, we were only a third of the way into the evening.
