Hummus products vandalized with labels deeming them 'contaminated with Zionism'

A hummus brand that was on display at three Philadelphia-area ACME Markets were vandalized this Wednesday with stickers calling on shoppers to “boycott Israeli goods,” The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

The brand, Sabra, was started in Israel back in 1939 and is now owned by PepsiCo and the Strauss Group. As The Inquirer points out, Sabra has long been targeted by anti-Israel activists due to its connection to a faction of the Israeli military.

Yellow stickers were placed on the lids of Sabra containers saying the brand was “contaminated with apartheid and Zionism.”

The stickers have since been removed from stores in Narberth, Bala Cynwyd, and Bryn Mawr, which are now cooperating with local law enforcement to “prosecute those responsible to the fullest extent of the law,” according to a statement from ACME.

“The foundation of our Acme culture is courtesy, dignity and respect,” the statement continued. “The vandalism that was committed on some of our products is an affront to that culture and the environment we wish to create for anyone walking through our doors.”

In a recent post to social media, Philly Palestine Coalition, who has organized boycotts of local Jewish businesses, said the businesses were singled out because they were “complicit in some degree in Israel’s system of occupation and apartheid.”
