Student hospitalised after further outbreak of violence in school

A school student has been hospitalised with a fractured shoulder blade after the latest incident of violence at a high school, in Nicosia, it emerged on Monday.

According to reports, three students allegedly raised a 13-year-old in the air and threw him to the ground. The student lost consciousness from the fall and an ambulance was called to the school.

Doctors subsequently determined that the boy had suffered a break in his scapula.

According to what was reported, the incident involved three students, one of whom had previously been expelled for injuring another child. The perpetrators made up a ‘clique’ known for its anti-social behaviour, delinquency, and intimidation and allegedly attacked the 13-year-old without any prior altercation.

A meeting has been called at the school in question on Tuesday, with all involved.

Meanwhile, the injured student is having to make arrangements to continue his studies from home through online learning.

The ministry of education has requested a report on the facts of the incident from the school and from the district inspector, and the protocol concerning issues of school violence has been activated.

The phenomenon of school violence is on the rise according to observers, including the head of the secondary parents’ association Loizos Constantinou, who said this reflects as societal trend and that students, parents and educators alike must assume their responsibilities.

Last month six students were expelled from the technical school in Paphos, following incidents of violence there.
