WFP requires $26 million to aid one million Afghan migrants

The World Food Programme (WFP) requires $26.3 million to continue aiding one million returning Afghan migrants from Pakistan.

The organization’s statement also noted that the expulsion of Afghan migrants took place at the worst possible time, leaving them unsure of how to survive the harsh winter.

The organization reports that it managed to support nearly 280,000 returnees with food and cash assistance in November.

According to United Nations statistics, following Pakistan’s one-month deadline for the expulsion of illegal Afghan migrants, over 370,000 Afghan migrants were forced to leave their homes and belongings in Pakistan and return to Afghanistan.

Moreover, Pakistani authorities have made a concerning declaration, expressing their plans to deport over one million Afghan migrants by January 2024. In response, the international community has strongly urged Pakistani officials to reconsider this action, particularly given the harsh winter conditions that these migrants would face in the country.

The situation highlights the growing humanitarian concern, as many organizations and nations are advocating for a more compassionate approach to address the challenges faced by Afghan migrants, especially amid severe weather conditions.

The organization adds that as more than six million people are internally displaced across Afghanistan, those returning from Pakistan are facing an uncertain future.
