Suspect arrested in Oakley house party shooting that killed teen

OAKLEY — An 18-year-old Oakley man has been arrested on suspicion of homicide, nearly six weeks after a shooting at a house party killed one teenager and wounded three others, authorities said.

Oakley police detectives and agents with the U.S. Marshals Service arrested Sean Karp on Thursday in the 900 block of 2nd Street in Brentwood, according to a statement from Oakley Police Chief Paul Beard.

Karp remained in custody at the Martinez Detention Facility on Friday in lieu of $3.5 million bail, according to jail records.

The shooting happened about 11:15 p.m. Oct. 21 at the party in the 400 block of Shannon Way. It killed 16-year-old Brentwood resident and Liberty High student Kemarion Tucker. A 17-year-old girl and two boys, ages 15 and 17, were hospitalized and later released.

A spokesperson for the Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office said the police department’s case against Karp has not been reviewed and that formal charges had not been filed.

Police in October arrested an 18-year-old Antioch resident who later was released from custody. Beard in his statement said that arrest “drew us closer to the facts of what happened during and after the shooting. Our detectives were provided with information from people who previously declined to talk to us and new evidence was revealed to us.”

Oakley police officers responded about 10:45 p.m.  to a noise complaint at the home where the party took place. They left after an 18-year-old woman who lived there declined an offer to help break up a party, Beard said in previous statements.

Shortly after police left, the party turned violent and several shots were fired in front of the home.

Beard in his statement acknowledged Tucker’s family, adding, “I know nothing can replace what they have lost, and there is a great sense of profoundness in their loss.”
