Prep roundup: No. 1 De La Salle cruises past Vallejo. SRV girls rout Redwood

No. 1 De La Salle 75, Vallejo 34

Alec Blair scored 24 points as De La Salle, the Bay Area News Group’s top-ranked team, improved to 2-0 with a victory at home over Vallejo on Thursday night in the first round of the DLS tournament.

Ibrahim Monawar added nine points and Braddock Kjellesvig added eight points for the Spartans, who will play Head-Royce in the semifinals on Friday.

De La Salle, coming off a 62-51 victory over Southern California powerhouse Centennial-Corona in its season opener on Saturday in Dublin, led Vallejo 19-10 after one quarter and 43-17 at halftime.

Head-Royce defeated Marin Catholic 61-39 in its first-round game Thursday.

On the other side of the bracket, Serra routed James Logan 78-38 and Central Catholic of Portland, Ore. defeated Sacramento 73-49.

The final is Saturday.

No. 13 Sacred Heart Prep 62, Granada 61

TJ O’Brien scored 27 points and JP Kerrigan chipped in with 10 points as Sacred Heart Prep held off last season’s NorCal Division I champion Granada in the first round of the Riordan tournament. Granada missed two free throws in the final second that would have won the game.

O’Brien made five of Sacred Heart Prep’s nine 3-pointers.

SHP will play University in the second round of the tournament on Friday.

Girls basketball

No. 3 San Ramon Valley 86, Redwood 43

Sofia Bowes had 21 points, eight rebounds and five assists to help San Ramon Valley breeze past Redwood in the first round of the Marin Catholic tournament.

Avery Knapp added 12 points and 10 rebounds and freshman Ella Gunderson had 10 points and five assists for the Wolves.

SRV (2-0) opened the season on Saturday with a 64-37 victory over Oakland Tech, last season’s Division I state champion and the Bay Area News Group’s preseason No. 2 team.

No. 11 Monte Vista 56, Castro Valley 40

Sophomore Alyssa Rudd filled up the stat sheet for Monte Vista on Thursday as the Mustangs defeated tournament host Castro Valley in a first-round game.

Rudd led Monte Vista with 29 points on 12-of-17 shooting, 16 rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Rachel Brans added 11 rebounds and seven points and freshman Naliyah Sefidi had 10 points on 5-of-9 shooting.

Menlo School 47, Sacred Heart Prep 43

Ruiqi Liu finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds and Arthi Abhyanker had 15 points to lead Menlo School to a victory over next-door neighbor Sacred Heart Prep in the Mills tournament.

Menlo also got 11 points from Karen Xin.

The Knights, who improved to 3-0 under new coach Ryan Cooper, continue tournament play on Friday against sixth-ranked Pinewood.
