Things haven’t gone as anybody hoped this season for the Chicago Bears. That includes Matt Eberflus. The head coach had high expectations for his team. What followed was a string of disappointments and failures. While the Bears are 4-8, which is technically better than their record last season, nothing about it suggests they’ve turned a corner. Those victories came against the following:
Anybody with common sense should know the Bears’ record is more indicative of a generous schedule than Eberflus’ coaching prowess. He’s faced three opponents this season that have winning records. One blew him out, and the other two staged huge 4th quarter comebacks to beat him. Eberflus has no arguments for keeping his job beyond the fact he’d gotten the defense to play better. That is probably why, according to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Bears are expected to move on after the season ends.
The historically low winning percentage is a good place to start. No Bears head coach has been this bad through 29 games in franchise history. He prides himself on discipline, but his players continue to play sloppy football. His choice for offensive coordinator in Luke Getsy looks like a poor one. Last but not least, his conservative coaching style has constantly led his team to come up short in big situations. Chicago would’ve lost in Minnesota had their QB situation not been so poor. One can’t overlook two 4th quarter fumbles and the defense blowing another lead.
Unless the Bears somehow put together a winning streak down the stretch, it’s hard to imagine Matt Eberflus sticking around. As Russini mentioned, the presence of new team president Kevin Warren is a critical factor. He didn’t hire Eberflus. Rumors have persisted he’d like to make some changes to the football operations, bringing in some of his own people. While GM Ryan Poles appears safe, switching head coach is a strong possibility. The same goes for the quarterback position. It could be an eventful January for the Bears.
