Judge tells woman who threw burrito bowl at Chipotle employee to work fast-food job if she wants less jail time

An Ohio woman got a unique sentence after throwing her Chipotle order at an employee.
  • A woman will reportedly be able to shorten her jail sentence by getting a fast food job.
  • The woman was charged with one count of assault after throwing a burrito bowl at a Chipotle worker.
  • The judge said he gave this unique sentence to teach the woman a "sense of empathy," WJW reported.

An Ohio woman who threw her Chipotle burrito bowl at an employee could soon learn what it takes to work in food service.

The incident occurred because 39-year-old Rosemary Hayne was unhappy with the way her order was made at a Parma, Ohio Chipotle restaurant, reported local Fox affiliate WJW. Parma is located just southwest of Cleveland.

A video of the incident, posted to Reddit, shows Hayne throwing her Chipotle burrito bowl at employee Emily Russell. Hayne was charged with one count of assault, but a judge reportedly told her she can shorten her six-month sentence by getting a part-time fast-food job.

The unique sentence was given by Parma Municipal Court Judge Timothy Gilligan, according to the report. In court, Hayne apologized to Russell, but reiterated that she was unsatisfied with her order.

"This is not 'Real Housewives' of Parma," Judge Gilligan told Hayne, according to WJW.

Gilligan also told Hayne that her behavior toward the Chipotle employee was unacceptable. He also said that he wanted her to work at a fast food restaurant to teach her a "sense of empathy," and to "deter others from this type of behavior," WJW reported.

Hayne was reportedly given a 180 day jail sentence with 90 days suspended. But, she can shorten her sentence by 60 days if she agrees to get a job at a fast-food restaurant, working at least 20 hours a week. Hayne agreed to the deal and said she will be getting a fast food job.

Russell, the employee who had the bowl thrown at her, left the job over the incident, according to WJW. A GoFundMe page, set up to support Russell has gotten over $1,300 in donations.

Russell wrote in a Facebook post, "It doesn't matter if it's a minimum wage worker, the biggest boss in the company, a person waiting for the bus on the road… no human being should ever be treated in any wrong way," according to The Messenger.

Chipotle has not responded to Business Insider's request for comment.
