Paul Ince has urged Tottenham to be a little more pragmatic against Manchester City rather than being as open as they were against Aston Villa.
Even though Tottenham were missing an entire team full of players against Aston Villa owing to injuries and suspensions, Ange Postecoglou decided to stick with his high-risk, attacking approach.
The tactic would have paid off if Spurs had been a little more clinical in front of goal, with the Lilywhites dictating proceedings for large parts of the game and fashioning a whole host of chances.
In fact, Son Heung-min had three goals ruled out for offside while Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro both struck the woodwork.
Postecoglou remarked after the game that despite the loss, he was quite pleased with his side’s performance, insisting that Spurs will come out of their current slump soon if they keep playing the same way (Football.London).
However, Ince believes that Tottenham will be punished by Man City if they decide to approach Sunday’s game in the same way.
When asked if Postecoglou will set his team up similarly at the Etihad Stadium, the former Blackburn Rovers boss told tallkSPORT (27/11/23): “I’m not sure. I don’t think he goes that way against Man City.
“I feel he’s got Villa at home, at the Tottenham stadium, [he said] we can go after Villa. Sometimes in football, yes, you can have your principles and how you want to play, but sometimes you have to be pragmatic.
“They have lost their last three games, remember. Would you go to City and play the way they play? Because one thing I have noticed over this weekend’s football is that City are ruthless. That’s why I don’t think he will go there [and be as attacking].”

Postecoglou has already demonstrated that he does not change his approach under any circumstances. Additionally, I do not think we are good enough at the back to defend deep and look hit City on the counter.
Our best bet to get a result may be to make it into a straight shootout and hope that Son puts away his chances as he often does against City.
