I’m worried my boyfriend will sleep with other women while we’re on break
DEAR DEIDRE: AFTER months of struggling in our relationship, things were hitting a breaking point between me and my boyfriend.
We felt there was no choice other than a break to figure things out.
Initially I thought it was a good idea, but now I’m starting to worry about what it may mean.
I’m 27, my boyfriend is 29 and we’ve been together for three years.
Since we agreed to a pause a week ago I’ve been really struggling.
What does a break even mean? Are we still committed to each other, or are we free agents now? I’m finding it hard to go on without asking him these questions.
The thought of him with other women is breaking my heart. I miss him so much and want to reach out, but I also don’t know when the appropriate time is.
I’m so worried.

DEIDRE SAYS: Usually taking a break means that you and your partner haven’t officially broken up and are simply on pause to reflect and evaluate.
Every couple has different boundaries, but unless it was explicitly discussed, it’s not OK to sleep with other people.
You’re clearly very unsettled so it would be best to ask him for some clarity.
There’s no harm in making contact to discuss boundaries.
