New Delhi: Amidst rumours of Rohit Sharma not leading the Indian T20I side during their tour of South Africa, an Indian Express report states that the Indian captain will be leading the national team against the Proteas in the shortest format. The report also states that KL Rahul will be leading in ODIs. The BCCI top brass are currently in the Capital to review ODI World Cup 2023 and also to pick up three squads for the South African tour. Rohit will be leading in Tests too.
While Virat Kohli has already reportedly communicated with BCCI about his non-availability in the white-ball formats for the South African tour, there were detailed discussions about Rohit’s future in T20Is. Earlier, it was reported that Rohit had told BCCI to not consider him for the T20Is.
But with the T20 World Cup 2024 just six-seven months away, it is understood that the management wants Rohit to lead the side in the mega event. In fact, the BCCI extended head coach Rahul Dravid and his support staff’s contracts till the T20 World Cup next year just a couple of days back.
Notably, both Rohit and Kohli haven’t played in T20Is for India since the Men in Blue’s T20 World Cup 2022 semifinal exit. Meanwhile, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane have reportedly missed out from the India Test squad for the South Africa series.
