UN Report on Afghanistan assessed in closed Security Council Session
The United Nations Security Council held a private meeting on the independent assessment of Afghanistan to assess the report submitted by Mr. Faridun Sinirlioglu, the United Nations Special Coordinator for Afghanistan.
The meeting was held on Tuesday, November 28th, behind closed doors and was attended by representatives from several United Nations Security Council member states.
The United Nations Office in Switzerland has stated that women and girls’ active presence and participation in all aspects of life are essential prerequisites for Afghanistan’s future in this session.
“The inclusion and Active participation of women and girls in all aspects of life is an essential condition for the country’s future,” read the statement.
Faridun Sinirlioglu’s report on the situation in Afghanistan approached with a forward-looking perspective, has been endorsed by Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the United Nations.
This report, which views “Intra-Afghan talks” and efforts to integrate Afghanistan into the international community as solutions to the current crisis in Afghanistan, was presented to the United Nations Security Council approximately two weeks ago.
The United Nations Security Council has not yet provided any comments or evaluations regarding this report.
In his report on the situation in Afghanistan, Faridun Sinirlioglu stated that the current situation hinders Afghanistan’s integration into the United Nations and the international community. According to him, it constitutes a violation of human rights and includes actions that contradict international commitments.
He has also indirectly referred to the normalization of relations with the Taliban, emphasizing that intra-Afghan talks are essential for overcoming the current crisis and preserving institutions, laws, and policies that ensure the rule of law.
