FANS have only just realised what the 11 lines on Ajax’s badge represent – and the reason for them is amazing.
The Dutch club was founded in 1900 and named after the Ancient Greek warrior “Ajax” who has been the face of the club’s crest since 1928.
The former badge featured a detailed illustration of Ajax.
But in 1990 the Amsterdam-based club simplified the depiction and portrayed his face with just 11 lines.
And a tweet has confirmed the number of lines on the badge represents the 11 players of a football team.
In the 2021-22 season, they brought back the old crest for one term after they won the Eredivisie and the KNVB Cup.
However, the start to the 2023-24 season has arguably been the worst in Ajax’s history.
With just ten games in, Ajax were struggling at the bottom of the table after having won just one of their opening eight games.
This was the Dutch side’s highest amount of home games lost since the 1960’s.
These events led to the sacking of former head coach Maurice Steijn last month.

And since the club’s drastic measures, Ajax has slowly returned to normality having won three of their last four league matches.
Their biggest victory of the term came on Saturday as they beat Vitesse 5-0 at the Johan Cruyff Arena.
Although their time in the Europa League this season has not been so great as they sit bottom of their Group B table.
They are yet to win a game after having faced a loss to Brighton and AEK Athens plus a draw against Marseille.
John van’t Schip’s side will be desperate to redeem their European record as they face Marseille away on Thursday night.
