Christmas market where sausage rolls costs 12 times MORE than Greggs has punters blasting ‘it’s a rip-off’

FAMISHED Christmas market-goers are livid after being charged 12 times more for a sausage roll than at Greggs.

The hog roast roll costs a wallet-burning £15 at the “rip off” attraction – but the much-loved bakery chain asks just £1.20.

Loaded fries cost £12, a sandwich £9 and a small glass of mulled wine £5.50 at the festive venue.

And now visitors to Manchester’s famous Christmas market told The Sun prices were “rubbish” and “take the p*ss”.

Tony Ward, 52, said he was “dragged” there from his Ardwick home by his 27-year-old boyfriend Thomas.

He said: “There’s nothing much about it, and it’s well expensive.

“This isn’t the Christmas spirit, is it heck, the amount they charge is ridiculous!

“The prices take the p*ss – the whole thing is just a money-making scheme.

“I know one lad who comes from abroad every year to run a stall here and he makes £80k in the two months.”

Thomas added: “It’s overpriced but I love it. It’s £9 for just a sandwich!”

Other sky-high prices include a £13.50 chicken waffle and a bagel for £9.50 at the markets which extend across Cathedral Gardens and Piccadilly Gardens.

Steve Mayall, of Manchester, was walking through when The Sun asked him if he visits the festive attraction.

The 66-year-old quipped: “Yes, I do. I use them as a shortcut to get to the next place.

“It’s all basically the same and it’s too expensive, it’s just rubbish and you won’t find me going to them.”

The prices at the markets – the biggest outside Germany – are stark when compared to high street prices.

At Morrisons, a bottle of mulled wine retails at £2.50 but it’s £5.50 for just a small glass in Manchester’s markets.

A cheese & onion sandwich at Aldi costs £1.19 but you’re not getting much change from a tenner if you want a sarnie at the attraction.

Eye-watering prices were not the main worry for Michaela Pivesso, originally from Monza, just north of Milan, Italy.

The 51-year-old, who moved to the UK 30 years ago, said: “I come every year but I might not spend any money because it is so expensive, I usually come to have a look around.

“It’s gone downhill in the last 10 years, it’s just shops who have businesses in the town already, and you don’t get people coming from far and wide anymore – there used to be a really good Vietnamese stall, but I don’t think they come anymore.”

The market runs from November 2 to December 24.
