A new national analysis finds abortion bans have saved the lives of over 32,000 babies from abortions so far, and the figure is likely higher. Births have increased in every state with an abortion ban as the lives of children are valued more now than before.
According to to an analysis published Friday by the Institute of Labor Economics, abortion bans have saved tens of thousands of babies in the first six months of 2023 alone.
“Our primary analysis indicates that in the first six months of 2023, births rose by an average of 2.3 percent in states enforcing total abortion bans compared to a control group
of states where abortion rights remained protected, amounting to approximately 32,000 additional annual births resulting from abortion bans,” the Institute reported.
With the Supreme Court overturning Roe in June 2022, the number of babies saved from abortions thanks to pro-life state laws is clearly higher given that abortion has been illegal in at least some states for 18 months.
Although some says abortion bans are not truly protecting babies because women can travel t other states from abortions, the analysis found that 20-25% of women end up choosing life for their baby instead of having an abortion thanks to the bans. As a result, 2.3% more babies were born in states with abortion bans compared to states without bans, the analysis shows.

Texas saw a 5.1% spike in the number of babies born, which is not surprising given that it found a way to protect babies from abortions before Roe was overturned.
In fact, Texas’ 2022 abortion report was released by Texas Health and Human Services in September 2023, showing a significant drop in abortions from 2021. The data shows that abortions fell to near zero in the state after the abortion ban went into effect in late 2022.
One leading pro-life advocate celebrated the news.
“The insinuation of a lot of coverage of such data points is that it’s a bad thing for there to be more children welcomed in states with better laws than in states that fast-track abortion,” Kristan Hawkins, the president of Students for Life of America, told The New York Times.
“It’s a triumph that pro-life policies result in lives saved,” she said.
