There are many types of displays to choose from when shopping for a new TV. What specific brand and model you should go with really depends on your budget and how much you prioritize picture quality.
If you just want a cheap TV for casual viewing, you really can't go wrong with any of the budget models we recommend above. Just find a deal that matches the price and size you're looking for. You can find small HDTVs for $100 or less during Cyber Monday, and decent 4K TVs start at around $300 depending on how big they are.
However, if you care a lot about image quality you should be more selective about the TV model you pick. For the best picture performance, we recommend a 4K TV with an OLED panel, or a QLED screen that uses a feature called local dimming. These screens enable the highest contrast and richest colors for high-end HDR images. Serious gamers should also make sure to get a TV that has a native 120Hz (or higher) refresh rate with variable refresh rate (VRR) capabilities to get the smoothest gameplay on Xbox Series X and PS5 consoles.
Top midrange QLED TVs start at around $700 for 65-inch models, and high-end options are about $1,800. Meanwhile, 65-inch OLEDs with midrange performance usually cost from $1,300 to $1,700, and high-end OLEDs can be as much as $3,500.
When choosing the size of your TV, you should think about the room it's going in, the screen's resolution, how close you want to sit to it, and how much you're willing to spend. Larger screen sizes cost more than similar models in smaller sizes, and you'll need to have a TV stand or wall that is big enough to fit whatever size you get. Certain display resolutions are also best suited for specific sizes.
For instance, HDTVs are decent at around 43 inches or under, but we don't recommend them at larger sizes. At 43 inches or less, you'd be hard-pressed to see the extra detail that a higher resolution offers unless you sit right up to the screen. If you want a 4K TV, we recommend getting a screen that's 50 inches or larger, since that size will highlight the benefits of Ultra HD resolution. Finally, 8K TVs are best appreciated on extra-large displays that are 75 inches or larger, but even then, a 4K TV should be enough for most people.

OLEDs use self-illuminating panels, which means that they dim and brighten on a pixel level to produce an infinite contrast ratio. With the lights off, black levels really look black. This makes OLED TVs the perfect fit for people who want the best picture performance in a home theater.
Meanwhile, QLED TVs are a type of LED display that rely on older LCD screen technology and require a backlight to illuminate the pixels you see on screen. QLED backlights can have multiple zones to brighten or dim specific areas, but even top QLED TVs can't match an OLED's pixel-level contrast. QLED TV backlights can cause an uneven look in dark scenes which leads to blooming around bright objects, or washed-out black levels that look gray.
But while we generally prefer OLED TVs over QLEDs, QLED TVs have an advantage with brightness. Top QLED TVs can get brighter than even the best OLED TVs. This makes QLEDs a better fit for people who like to watch TV in rooms with many windows that let in sunlight. QLED TVs are also often less expensive than OLEDs and they're not at risk for burn-in.
