Could the Royals move to Kansas?
Jaylon Thompson writes about free agent starting pitchers the Royals could target.
A few names to watch are Seth Lugo, Jack Flaherty and Lucas Giolito.
The Royals reportedly had interest in Lugo last offseason. He offers a lot of flexibility having also been a reliever in his career. Lugo spent the 2023 campaign with the San Diego Padres and was a full-time starter.
Lugo, 34, posted a 3.57 ERA in 26 starts and struck out 140 batters. He registered a 2.8 WAR (wins above replacement) and held opponents to a .248 batting average.
Flaherty has struggled his last few years. He is far removed from his 2019 campaign where he posted a 2.75 ERA. Last season, he spent time with two teams and didn’t make the Baltimore Orioles’ postseason roster.
Jackson County lawmaker Manny Abarca IV believes the Royals could move to Kansas.
“We have heard from direct sources that there are serious considerations for a move to the Kansas side,” he said.
Abarca explained the future locations of the two teams are being negotiated in tandem, and Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas said on X he’s concerned Jackson County will lose the Chiefs over this.
Abarca believes the possibility of Kansas City, Missouri, losing both of its sports teams is very real and comes from a lack of trust between county leaders and the teams.
“It’s very hard to make a real deal of any sort when there’s no trust and belief that we can get this done,” he said.
