TalkSPORT pundit Gabby Agbonlahor has urged Brentford striker Ivan Toney to join either Tottenham Hotspur or Chelsea in January.
Ivan Toney has been linked with an exit from Brentford in January, when his ban elapses. The Daily Express in October revealed that Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea were set to battle it out for the striker’s signature.
Contrasting reports started emerging last week that Toney could actually remain at Brentford for the rest of the season and even renew his contract with the Bees (talkSPORT).
The Sun also added that the 27-year-old was unsure of leaving Brentford in January and making the step up to a bigger club, as he wanted to ‘repay the Bees’ for the faith they had shown in him.
However, a couple of days ago, The Daily Mail named Arsenal and Chelsea as the contenders for Toney’s signature, making no mention of Spurs. They also added that the Gunners were in ‘pole position’ for his signature.
Speaking to TalkSPORT (22/11/2023 at 08:58), former Aston Villa footballer Gabby Agbonlahor claimed that he thinks it would be in the best interests of both the club and the player if Ivan Toney chose to join either Spurs or Chelsea in January.
“Ivan Toney, for me, Spurs or Chelsea. If Chelsea can work a deal, maybe a ten-year contract, they look to do their contracts long, but I could see him at Chelsea.”
“I don’t think Jackson’s the finished article that Chelsea need and Ivan Toney, imagine the goals he’d score at Spurs or Chelsea, top player.”
I don’t see Ivan Toney leaving in January if he has an emotional commitment that he wants to fulfil with Brentford. Even if he is up for sale though, Tottenham might not get into a bidding war.
Interest from Arsenal and Chelsea mean the Bees will only drive the price up and it doesn’t make sense for Spurs to try and outbid either of the clubs. I don’t see the Toney moving to Spurs.
