Shopping centre blaze kills 10 people and injures 20 others
At least 10 people have been killed and 20 others injured after a fire ripped through a shopping centre.
It happened in Pakistan’s capital Karachi, in the multi-storey RJ Mall which is in a commercial high-rise building that also houses call centres and software firms.
Karachi mayor Murtaza Wahab Siddiqui said on X, formerly known as Twitter, the fire had now been extinguished and a cooling process was underway.
The cause of the fire is not yet clear but an investigation is now underway.
Incidents like these are common in Karachi and this is not the first time a fire like this has occurred.
A fire tore through a garment factory killing four firefighters in April earlier this year.
The building collapsed after flames ripped through it.
At least 10 people were killed in a fire at a chemical factory in Karachi in August 2021.
In the deadliest such incident, 260 people were killed after being trapped inside a garment factory when a fire broke out.
Hundreds of families were also left homeless after a huge fire ripped through a Pakistani slum in 2020.
More than 100 burlap-and-plastic shelters were burnt to the ground in the Teenhatti neighbourhood of Karachi.
Area police chief Liaquat Hayyat confirmed no one was hurt after firefighters quickly doused the flames.
