The Athletic’s David Ornstein thinks that Tottenham Hotspur will be furious at Everton’s allegation that the North London club shortchanged them while negotiating a deal for Richarlison.
Everton have been hit with a 10-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s financial rules following an investigation by an independent commission.
The Premier League announced last week that the commission determined that the Toffees’ PSR calculation for the relevant period resulted in a loss of £124.5m, which exceeded the permitted threshold of £105m.
In the independent Commission’s full written reasons (as published on the Premier League website), it is revealed that one of the reasons that the Toffees gave was that they received a fee of just £60m for Richarlison, who they were hoping to sell for £80m.
They suggested that Tottenham took advantage of their situation to sign the forward for a lower fee, which according to The Daily Mail, did not go down well at Spurs, who outbid both Arsenal and Chelsea for the Brazilian’s services 18 months ago.
Speaking on Stick To Football, Ornstein said about Everton’s accusation: “They argue that they sold Richarlison for below his value.
“Tottenham will be furious at the idea that they’ve shortchanged Everton because their role is to negotiate the best deal for them. The Everton situation serves as a warning for what may come for other clubs too.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Everton were evidently clutching at straws when they reasoned to the independent commission that they sold Richarlison under his market value. I would not be surprised if the relationship between the two clubs sours as a result of this development.
