Graeme Bailey has said that Tottenham are on the lookout for midfield players but would only strengthen the position if Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg departs the club in January.
There has been a lot said and written about Tottenham’s January plans over the last couple of weeks, with various reports indicating that signing a centre-back and a defensive midfielder is at the top of the club’s agenda (Football Insider).
There has particularly been a lot of speculation about Spurs’ pursuit of a centre-half, with the likes of Lloyd Kelly, Trevor Chalobah and Marc Guehi thought to be among the names on the North London club’s wishlist (GiveMeSport).
More recently, there have also been suggestions that Ange Postecoglou’s men will look to strengthen their wide areas after the injuries to Manor Solomon and Ivan Perisic (Tribal Football).
Meanwhile, we have heard some contradictory reports regarding Hojbjerg’s future over recent weeks, with some outlets claiming that Tottenham would allow the Dane to join Juventus on loan (Corriere dello Sport (via Tutto Juve) while other publications have said that the club expect the player to stay (The Sun).
Bailey has now suggested that Tottenham are preparing for the possibility of the former Southampton man departing and are looking at potential alternatives.
The journalist said on Talking Transfers Podcast about Spurs’ January plans: “They do want to do a few things, they wanted a centre-half anyway, going forwards, Eric Dier is available at the end of the season on a free, Ben Davies, we don’t see him having a long-term future.
“A midfielder is a possibility, but I think that is dependent on whether or not Hojbjerg leaves. If he leaves they will sign a replacement, they are looking around.”

I do not think Postecoglou would mind keeping Hojbjerg as a squad player until the end of the season. However, the Dane will probably ask to leave and I suspect that the Australian would want a midfielder to arrive through the door before green-lighting the 28-year-old’s departure.
