Charlo weighs in three pounds heavy for Benavidez fight

Jermall Charlo's 163-pound catchweight for tomorrow's fight with Jose Benavidez Jr wound up being insufficiently generous, as he hit the scales at a whopping 166.4.

He received some extra time to shed the weight, as usual, but actually wound up gaining an extra 0.2 pounds on his second attempt.

Benavidez, a career welterweight, came in more than a pound under the limit. The fight is still on at time of writing.

Charlo's WBC title was never on the line, so his farcical reign continues regardless of tomorrow's outcome. He'll get the order to face Carlos Adames afterwards, assuming Mauricio Sulaiman doesn't change his mind at any point.

Honestly, the person I feel the worst for is trainer Ronnie Shields, who went to bat for his charge and assured skeptics that he was back in top form. This whole situation is deeply unfair for everyone save Charlo himself, and to not even attempt to shed the extra weight paints a picture of someone undeserving of the immense amount of slack he received.
