I kicked my father-in-law out on Thanksgiving as he broke my cleanliness rules, my husband backed me but now I’m worried
A MOTHER has revealed that she kicked her father-in-law out of her home on Thanksgiving because he broke her only rule.
Her husband backed up her cleanliness decision, but she was worried if she overreacted.
An anonymous Reddit user posted on the Am I The A**hole, asking random people online to weigh in.
“My only rule I have for my house is no shoes inside,” the 28-year-old wrote.
“It really grosses me out and I have a baby who crawls on the floor,” she added.
The social media user lets the rule “slide” if there are furniture or appliance deliveries.
But for her guests, she asked them to remove their shoes.
She said that she provides booties, socks, and slippers for people to feel comfortable.
Before her event, the author said she reminded people about her rule.
But during her Thanksgiving dinner, a gathering of 16 people, her father-in-law walked through the kitchen with his “muddy shoes.”
“I gasped as he’s been to my house before,” she wrote.
“I told him nicely oh haha you are so excited to eat that you forgot to take off your shoes,” she added.
But it wasn’t an accident: Her father-in-law refused to remove his shoes.
“My anxiety started kicking in,” she typed. “He told me I was a horrible person for making people take off their shoes and I need to stop being selfish.”
The host asked her father-in-law to leave, and her husband backed her decision.
“Before he left he proceeded to walk all over my carpets,” she finished. “I sent him a really mean text saying that he was just acting childish.”
At the bottom of the post, the author asked social media users if she and her husband were wrong.
The answer was a resounding no. People online said the author was not the a**hole.
“It’s your house, and he doesn’t get to be a jackass and tell you what he’s going to do in your house, especially with filthy shoes,” reads the most popular answer.
“Even if it was an unreasonable request – and it isn’t esp with a crawling baby – he was rude and childish,” a second said.
“I’m Canadian so find the idea of wearing shoes inside absolutely disgusting,” a third added. “No one I know does it.”
The author’s shoelessness rule is backed up by science.
There is no downside to leaving shoes at the door, but wearing them inside can bring harmful pathogens into the house, CNN wrote in 2022.
