Coldframe Hanggung

Coldframe Hanggung is a minimal cafe located in Suwon-si, South Korea, designed by Sherpa. This space, reminiscent of a cold frame, is designed to retain warmth even amidst colder settings. Central to this design is the use of black wood, a material selected for its ability to embody both warmth and coolness. Upon entering, visitors are immediately greeted by a wall that reveals its concrete texture through a refined sanding process. This wall, adorned with plants, offers a soothing contrast, infusing the space with a sense of comfort. The interior features a polished stainless steel partition.

This not only serves as a functional divider within the space but also plays a crucial role in reflecting light and projecting the main wall. This strategic placement enhances the overall visual experience, making the design intentions more palpable. Furniture within the space echoes the principles of brutalist architecture, characterized by its monolithic appearance. Notable pieces include a long bench and a large table, whose contrasting colors contribute to the warm ambiance. The designers have incorporated a grid frame reminiscent of those found in plant greenhouses. This choice not only offers structural coherence but also subtly nods to the overarching theme of blending the organic with the architectural.
