Ahmedabad: India might have lost the toss just before the start of the match against Australia at the ICC World Cup 2023 Final on Sunday at the Narendra Modi Stadium, but this loss means good for Rohit Sharma and co due to a past record at the 50-over summit clash.
Historically, the Men in Blue have gone onto win the World title, whenever they’ve lost the toss in the final.
In 1983 and in 2011 Final, India have lost the toss and they’ve gone onto win the summit clash. Only in 2003, when they played against the Australians, won the toss and ended up on the losing side.
So the Indians can count on this loss for good luck.
“I would have batted first. Looks a good pitch, big game, put runs on the board. It’s going to be amazing, everytime we play here, the crowd come out in large numbers. This is the biggest occasion in the cricketing calendar. We have to stay nice and calm,” Rohit said at the toss.
Speaking about the match, Virat Kohli (54) and K.L Rahul (66) hit the fifties before Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins wreaked havoc as Australia restricted India to 240 all out.
Rohit Sharma gave India a blazing start, but Australia made a comeback with regular strikes to put the hosts on the backfoot. Kohli, who became the first Indian to score 50+ runs in both the semifinal and final of the same World Cup, and Rahul did revive India’s innings with cautious knocks but Australia kept taking wickets at regular intervals.
