THERE’S nothing like fish and chips from your local chippy.
But one woman who used to work in one has shared the recipe you can try at home for the ultimate fakeaway.
Start by mixing flour, cornflour and baking powder[/caption] Add Sprite to make a batter, and coat the fish – which should have already been coated in the flour mixture[/caption]First add three cups of plain flour to a bowl, followed by one cup of cornflour, half a teaspoon of baking powder and a pinch of turmeric.
Don’t be shy with the salt when you season the mixture, and then mix together.
Put the piece of fish – she used haddock – in the flour to coat it, and then take it out.
Add a bottle of Sprite to the flour mixture, and mix to create a batter.
If you don’t want to use Sprite, you can replace it with sparkling water.
Then put the flour-coated fish back into the batter mixture, before deep frying in oil.
For the chips, she used Maris Piper potatoes, but said her best recommendation is to use red potatoes.
Fry them in oil until they’re light in colour, and then when cooled down, fry again until crispy.
“I know a very popular takeaway in Birmingham that uses this EXACT recipe!” Mum Chef captioned her TikTok video.
However, when asked to name the Birmingham restaurant, she refused to do so.
People were quick to comment on the video, with one writing: “That fish looks 10/10!”
“I’m drooooooling!” another gushed.
“Girl, you keep coming through with these recipes.. appreciated,” a third commented.
“Sprite???” someone else asked.
With the chef replying: “You’d be surprised how many shops use it in their batter!”
Then put the batter-coated fish into oil to deep fry it[/caption] And served the fish and chips with some bread and butter[/caption]
