Two men have been charged with allegedly beating and robbing an elderly man in his backyard in Bridgeport, leading to the arrest of two others who were wanted on warrants, police said.
On Thursday, a 75-year-old man suffered a minor head injury after being repeatedly punched by two men, shoved behind a dumpster and robbed of his wallet while he was in his backyard on East Main Street, according to the Bridgeport Police Department.
Investigators quickly identified 33-year-old Carlos Souffront and 46-year-old Angel Martinez, both of Bridgeport, as suspects in the attack. The robbery was captured on video and allegedly showed Martinez and Souffront walk up to the victim with their arms in their pockets, motioning “as if they had guns,” police said in a statement.
On Friday morning, detectives spotted Souffront and Martinez at the corner of Kossuth and Maple Streets. The pair were in a black Nissan Rogue that had been reported stolen out of Stratford. According to police, they allegedly used the SUV to flee the robbery and were still wearing the same clothes they wore during the attack, police said.
Souffront was taken into custody while standing outside of the SUV but Martinez took off. He was quickly stopped by officers from the gang unit at East Main Street and Arctic Street and was arrested, police said.
Souffront was charged with first-degree robbery, third-degree assault on an elderly person and sixth-degree larceny, police said.
Martinez was charged with first-degree robbery, third-degree assault on an elderly person and sixth-degree larceny. He was also arrested on unrelated warrants for third-degree burglary and third-degree larceny, police said.
Investigators found another wanted man and a wanted woman with Souffront and Martinez at the time of their arrests.
Patrick Brittin, 40, was arrested on a warrant for second-degree failure to appear in court. He had another warrant out of Pennsylvania and was charged with being a fugitive from justice from Pennsylvania, police said.
Sherri Caro, 39, of Milford was arrested on warrants for first-degree failure to appear in court and second-degree failure to appear in court, police said.
