The Mets are targeting former Yankee Luis Severino and plan to meet with him soon, according to Will Sammon of the Athletic.
Severino is a bounce-back candidate for the 2024 season. He was a two-time All-Star with the Yankees and held a career 3.39 ERA through the 2022 season. Severino struggled in 2023, pitching to a 6.65 ERA in 89 1/3 innings before being shut down with an oblique injury.
Many teams still believe that Severino could return to his former self. Brendan Kuty of the Athletic reported on Nov. 7 that eight teams had reported interest in Severino. It’s unknown if the Mets were one of those original eight teams.
It’s not surprising that the Mets are checking in with Severino. The organization has been linked to the starting pitching market this offseason, which includes a strong interest in Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Severino would be 30 years old at the start of the 2024 season. In 2023, he went 4-8 with a 6.65 ERA and 1.646 WHIP in 89 1/3 innings.
