Fabrizio Romano has seemingly handed Tottenham a boost in their rumoured pursuit of Kalvin Phillips by suggesting that Juventus are not expected to sign the Manchester City midfielder in January.
Over the last few weeks, there has been plenty of speculation linking Phillips with a move to Spurs.
Several outlets have suggested recently that Ange Postecoglou’s side are ‘really keen’ on winning the race for the midfielder in January. (Football Transfers).
The former Leeds man is also thought to be on the radars of Bayern Munich (90 min), Newcastle United (TEAMtalk) Juventus (Gazzetta via Sport Witness) and Liverpool (Mirror).
The Sun claimed on November 10 that Juve were confident of beating the other suitors to the England international’s signature in January. The outlet asserted that the Bianconeri have begun work on a loan deal for the City star.
However, Romano has now rubbished that suggestion, insisting that Massimiliano Allegri’s men want a midfielder who would contribute more going forward.
The journalist told CaughtOffside: “I don’t know the exact name of the midfielder that they’re (Juve) after yet, it’s too early.
“Kalvin Phillips, Thomas Partey and other names being spoken about are too defensive. Juve actually want an offensive midfielder and it has to be a cheap deal, they’re not spending crazy money.”

If it is true that Juve are prioritising signing a number eight rather than a six, that potentially means that they are not going to push ahead with a move for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, which in turn, affects Tottenham’s plans on whether to sign a midfielder in January.
