Dean Jones has explained in his column on GiveMeSport that Tottenham’s strategy in the transfer window has evolved considerably due to the changes that have been made in the recruitment department.
After a long wait, Tottenham finally announced last month that Johan Lange will take over as the club’s new sporting director, with the Dane replacing Fabio Paratici, who left his position as the club’s managing director of football back in April.
Rob Mackenzie has also followed Lange from Aston Villa to Spurs, taking over as the club’s new chief scout (Football.London’s Alasdair Gold).
Jones has now explained that the days of buying players at the recommendations of agents are over at Tottenham.
Moving forward, transfer targets are expected to be data-driven, with Lange expected to work together with Mackenzie to use analytics to identify the players with the specific attributes that Ange Postecoglou wants.
The journalist explains that the projected value rise of targets is also not going to be an important factor for the Lilywhites moving forward.
Finally, Jones asserts that while Tottenham may not spend huge sums, they would not hesitate to pay a significant fee if they identify players that fit the exact mould they are looking for.

The aforementioned changes in recruitment strategy clearly preceded Lange’s arrival, as evidenced by the players we signed in the summer. In fact, Lange was likely brought through the door by Scott Munn and Levy because he was a good fit for the data-led approach.
