SAN LEANDRO — A man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of his domestic partner’s adult daughter Saturday afternoon outside a Chili’s restaurant, police said Monday.
The woman killed was a 24-year-old East Bay resident, authorities said. Her name was not immediately released.
In a news release, police said the suspect, Samuel Langworthy, 48, of Oakland, was arrested Saturday evening after California Highway Patrol officers spotted him driving on Interstate 5 near Coalinga.
He had been sought in the 2:45 p.m. Saturday shooting, which police said was preceded by a verbal altercation between Langworthy and the woman in the restaurant parking lot at Bayfair Center.
Police alleged that Langworthy got a gun from his vehicle and shot the woman once in the head at close range. She died at the scene. Authorities said the woman’s mother was among the witnesses.
Police have not yet said what the altercation was about.
The gun has not yet been recovered. Police did say Langworthy told investigators he discarded it somewhere along the freeway but would not provide more specific details on the location.
In the release, San Leandro police Lt. Abe Teng said the department “would like to express our gratitude to the officers of the California Highway Patrol Central Division. Their assistance in locating Langworthy allowed us to provide the victim’s family with the swift justice they deserve.”
Langworthy was being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail and is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday.
