Former UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s surprise comeback as Foreign Secretary
Former British Prime Minister David Cameron returned to a top government job on Monday, becoming the Foreign Secretary in a big shake-up of the Conservative government. They also fired the controversial Home Secretary Suella Braverman.
Cameron, who served as the UK’s Prime Minister from 2010 to 2016 and played a pivotal role in the Brexit process, was chosen by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in a Cabinet reshuffle. During this reshuffle, Braverman, a formidable advocate for law and order, was dismissed after facing criticism for accusing the police of being too lenient with pro-Palestinian protesters.
Mr. Cameron wrote in a note on the social media platform, “While I’ve been out of the frontlines of politics for the past seven years, I hope my experience will help support Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.”
David Cameron is a well-known figure in global politics at the age of 57. He has 11 years of experience leading the Conservative Party and six years of experience as the Prime Minister of Britain in his resume.
The new Foreign Secretary of Britain mentioned that while he may disagree with some of the individual decisions made by Rishi Sunak, he believes that the Prime Minister is a “strong and capable” leader.
David Cameron’s unexpected return to the forefront of British politics comes at a time when he has spent the past seven years writing his memoirs and engaging in business endeavours.
Rishi Sunak’s office announced on Monday that despite David Cameron no longer being a Member of Parliament, King Charles has approved granting him a Cabinet seat, allowing him to return to the government as a minister.
