YOU have got to be Kipling! Shoppers have seen the price of cake nearly triple in two years, but cakeflation won’t curb our cravings.
A recent Sun survey found that Bakewell tarts and apple pie are the nation’s favourite bakes, followed by French fancies, angel slices and classic jam tarts.
Mr Kipling’s treats may be exceedingly good, but can you taste the difference against own-brand dupes?

A PERFECT ratio of icing to cake and a zingy lemon kick in every bite — a real treat for the tastebuds.

THE citrus didn’t quite come through in this finger slice but the neat and uniform shape would impress guests.

Mr Kipling Viennese Whirls, £2.50
CRUNCHY, with a candy-like texture inside. The generous spread of cream and jam make them a perfect afternoon tea accompaniment.

OH crumbs, this is a very messy biscuit.
A single bite left a dusting of debris over my jumper and a tacky feeling on my teeth. A snack to eat when you are alone.

Mr Kipling Bramley Apple Pies, £2.75
A DRY crust and overbrowned pastry that has had too long in the oven.
A tasty apple pie but sadly underfilled. I needed a whole glass of water to wash it down.

PERFECTLY baked with a lip-licking sprinkle of sugar on top. The soft apple chunks almost hit the top of the pie. Moist and delicious.

Mr Kipling Angel Slices, £3.95
ONE bite felt like eating a whole spoonful of sugar.
The canary yellow and hot pink cake might catch your eye, but it is just too artificial for me.
Angel Cake Slices, £1.25, Morrisons
I’M loving these angels instead. Natural in looks and taste but enough sweetness to keep me coming back for more.
These belong in every afternoon tea.

Mr Kipling French Fancies, £3
QUITE heavy on the icing and with a slightly dry sponge inside.
None of the miniature cakes looked the same. Some say it is unique — but I say it’s lazy.
Holly Lane Fondant Fancies, £1.75, Aldi
WELL, fancy that. These little chocolate box treats were so moreish, it is a good job there are so many.
With a soft bite and stylish square design, these get a thumbs-up from me.

Mr Kipling Jam Tarts, £2
MESSY to eat but ideal if you prefer a more crumbly pastry tart.
The jam was a bit too sweet, but it certainly didn’t stop me eating it.

THIS treat melted in my mouth and had the perfect amount of jam to satisfy my sweet tooth.
I was very pleased with this balanced, bite-size delight.

Mr Kipling Cherry Bakewells, £2.75
THE best bit of this bake was the massive cherry on top.
The icing was too thick and chewy and left me feeling sick.
Cherry Bakewell Tarts, £1.19, Tesco
A DISAPPOINTINGLY small cherry tucked into the sticky lid, but overall this tart was less sickly and boasted a more subtle marzipan flavour that I like.
