Growing up, you think being a royal is all about dancing in balls, falling in love, traveling the world, and basically living the best life. But the more we learn about what it takes to be a royal, the more it sounds like a nightmare for some. Not only are there a bunch of royal rules, some of which even nitpick what board games the family can play, but sacrifice is the name of the game — especially if you married into the family.
According to royal expert Robert Lacey, author of Battle of Brothers: William and Harry – The Inside Story of a Family in Tumult, Queen Camilla told Kate Middleton that she had to be a wife first when it comes to marrying Prince William and into the royal family.
“Camilla had confided to Kate the secret of hanging on to a busy prince: fit your timetable – well, basically your whole life – around his,” he said, per Mirror. Happy wife, happy life? Not exactly. Camilla’s reported advice was basically, your whole life needs to be centered around his. His life and timetable are above yours, and that hasn’t sit well with many.
“While Kate’s medium-to-long-term objective was quite simple – to lead William in handcuffs to the altar – for the time being, she had to devise her own independent career path as camouflage,” he added. “This was a matter of both personal and public tactics. In neither respect would it help Ms Middleton to appear the slightest bit needy – and of course there was the ultimate unthinkable possibility that she might end up getting dumped!”
Kate and William later married in 2012 after dating on-and-off since 2003.
