THE host of Wheeler Dealers has revealed the show’s backstage secrets and why certain classic motors get picked for episodes.
Mike Brewer, who fronts the hit Discovery programme, admitted sometimes finding it hard to source vintage motors, especially after a whopping 18 series.
He did share that the cars are largely picked out based on a secret “list” of models he and the team want to work on.
He told The Express: “First and foremost we have a list of cars already.
“We have a list of cars that either we can get to or we can’t get to.”
However, the rapidly changing value of classics has impacted on their ability to get hold of some of the entries on the list.
Mike explained: “We might have written down 10 years ago, Lotus Carlton, but today we would never do a Lotus Carlton because they are £80,000.
“They are outside the remit of Wheeler Dealers. 10 years ago you could buy one for £15,000.
“So cars seem to drop off the list and other cars come on the list.”
As for what else is in the list, Mike remained tight-lipped, but he did give an insight into the show’s direction going forward.
Starting this year, the team have been focussing more on the history of major manufacturers, including a special episode this series on the Ford Fiesta after the US giant announced the model would be discontinued.
He went on: “One of the things me and Elvis [co-host Marc Priestly] have done particularly in the last two series when we have been working together is we’ve been focussing on not only what the audience wants but also on anniversaries.
“Cars have been with us now for a millennium, one hundred years and there are lots of manufacturers celebrating their anniversaries.
“We look at those anniversaries and we try to pin our shows around this because inevitably if you’ve got a birthday or an anniversary or a special event we can hook our show into that party and it gives us a nice big rapturous ending.”
It comes after the new Ford Capri was spotted out and about decades after the original model was discontinued.
Meanwhile, locals of a small town have been left fuming by “crazy” plans to demolish a garage to make way for 176 new flats.
